If you have lived in La Costa for more than a couple of years, you already know the beach part. Ponto, South Carlsbad State, the bluff walk. That is not the story this summer.
The story is what has happened three miles inland. A $70 million resort refresh, a tenant reshuffle at The Forum, and a run of chef-driven openings along El Camino Real have quietly turned the triangle between Costa Del Mar Road, Calle Barcelona, and La Costa Avenue into the neighborhood's new center of gravity. Here is where residents are actually going.
El Camino Real is now a real food street
For years the honest answer to "where should we eat in La Costa on a Tuesday" involved a drive. That is changing fast.
Nómada soft opened at 6996 El Camino Real in the space that was previously Alejandra's Cantina, Ignite, and The Crazy Burro, with a grand opening on January 16, 2026. Chef Alex Carballo's menu draws on his travels across Mexico and features Baja fish tacos, cochinita pibil, Oaxacan moles, ceviche, raw oysters, and other regional specialties, many cooked in a wood-burning oven. The venue combines indoor and outdoor spaces, including a patio with fire pits, a U-shaped bar, a stage for live events, and private dining for up to 250 guests. Nómada serves dinner daily, weekend brunch, and weekday happy hour. A 250-seat private dining capacity is worth pausing on. That is the kind of number that quietly changes a neighborhood, because it means the graduation party, the milestone birthday, and the fundraiser no longer have to leave La Costa to happen.
A mile north at La Costa Town Square, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue opened its 100th California location within La Costa Town Square in Carlsbad. The restaurant, owned by franchisee Chloe Tran, offers dine-in, takeout, mobile ordering, third-party delivery, and catering. The opening was announced May 22, 2026. Small footprint, big Friday-night utility when nobody wants to cook.
Zoom out and the pattern is obvious. El Camino between La Costa Avenue and Alga Road has gone from a corridor of turnover storefronts to a mixed lineup where a Sinaloan wood-fire concept sits a few minutes from a plate-lunch counter, which sits a few minutes from Black Rail Kitchen + Bar's firepit patio at the La Costa Resort side. That is not a food scene borrowed from downtown. It is a local one.
Omni La Costa quietly became a neighborhood venue
Most residents still think of Omni La Costa as a hotel with a good spa. That framing is out of date.
The resort finished a substantial reinvention in 2024. The North County property's $70 million facelift includes a refreshed spa, a brand-new golf course, and more than 600 revamped guest rooms. The property houses two golf courses, including the reopened $25 million North Course, where college-aged golfers will compete in Division 1 NCAA tournaments at least through 2026. A new putting green and practice range give guests a place to warm up. The scope also added a 15,000 square foot second ballroom, expansive meeting and indoor/outdoor event spaces, and a 40,000 square foot Member's Clubhouse with a private pool, plus new restaurant and retail concepts throughout the central plaza.
Here is the part that matters if you already live down the street. That refresh came with programming aimed at locals, not just overnight guests. From the Carlsbad Chamber's own summer roundup:

Two of those three dates are still ahead this summer. Pair that with the resort's warm-weather concert series. In the summer, the property hosts open-air concerts.
For everyday use, the two restaurants worth knowing are VUE and Bar Traza. VUE features creative dishes with local and sustainable ingredients including its own herb garden wall, with brunch and dinner, indoor and outdoor seating, and views overlooking the golf courses and foothills. Bar Traza is the produce-driven California food option with a thoughtful craft cocktail menu; a cocktail called "Of All Things" is full of pleasantly bitter and tangy stuff including grapefruit, rhubarb, and Aperol. One local read on the property from San Diego Magazine put it plainly: if you want the more interesting kitchen, choose Bar Traza over Bob's Steak & Chop House.
If you have not walked the central plaza since the reopening, an evening drink there is the fastest way to update your mental map of what La Costa offers within a five-minute drive.
The Forum is not the mall you remember
Calle Barcelona has been busy. The Forum Carlsbad has added a stack of tenants aimed squarely at how North County actually shops in 2026.
The recent additions worth knowing:
- Nike by La Costa at the corner near Urban Outfitters and across from Sur La Table, carrying sport performance apparel, footwear, and accessories.
- Alo Yoga, between Johnny Was and Madewell.
- McConnell's Fine Ice Creams, next to Geppetto's, from the Santa Barbara maker with its own dairy farm.
- Tecovas, the Austin-founded Western apparel brand, in its second San Diego-area location.
- Abercrombie & Fitch, which opened at 1905 Calle Barcelona.
The new-to-center trio of Nike by La Costa, Alo Yoga, and McConnell's Fine Ice Creams joined the shopping center together; the Nike store carries sport performance apparel, footwear, and accessories, Alo Yoga sits between Johnny Was and Madewell, and McConnell's is next to Geppetto's. The Forum also added Tecovas, which offers Western-style apparel and opened its second San Diego-area location in Carlsbad, and Abercrombie & Fitch, known for its classic denim, which debuted at The Forum Carlsbad in November.
There is a family angle here that gets missed. The Forum hosts Discovery Days programming, including sessions like Songs & Shells of the Sea, Dino Day, and Out of this World at 1923 Calle Barcelona. If you have kids under ten and a Saturday morning with no plan, that is a free anchor to build the day around.
Casa de Bandini remains the most reliable Friday night reservation on the property, and the koi pond and open-air layout are still the reason people pick it over an enclosed mall on a warm evening.
Saturday mornings still belong to Maverick Way
One thing has not changed, and that is a feature. The La Costa Canyon Farmers Market runs every Saturday at La Costa Canyon High School at One Maverick Way from 10:00 in the morning to 2:00 in the afternoon. The market offers fresh locally grown produce, flowers, specialty foods like sauces, marinades, olive oils, bakeries, fresh fish, food trucks, and local artists, and benefits La Costa Canyon High School's Visual and Performing Arts Department. The school is located across the street from Stagecoach Park on Camino De Los Coches.
Local baseline worth noting: Carlsbad's flagship market is the State Street Farmers' Market in the Village, which is a Wednesday afternoon operation. If you work regular hours, the La Costa Canyon market is the one that actually fits your week. And unlike the State Street market's food-first identity, the LCC market leans into produce and household staples, which is what most residents are actually shopping for.
Pair it with a coffee run and a lap around Stagecoach Park and you have a two-hour Saturday routine that costs nothing and takes you nowhere near Interstate 5.
Reading the shift
Three things happened in a short window. The Omni finished a nine-figure overhaul and started programming for locals, not just tourists. The Forum swapped in five nationally recognized names in categories the neighborhood was actually shopping in. And the El Camino corridor picked up a chef-driven Mexican restaurant with a real bar program plus a well-run casual counter, replacing storefronts that had cycled through operators for years.
None of that is beach-adjacent, and that is the point. If you moved to La Costa in the 2000s or 2010s, the mental map you built was probably organized around the coastline. The 2026 version is organized around a two-mile stretch inland. Test it against your own weekend. Where did you eat last Friday, where did you shop last Saturday, where did you take the out-of-town guests last month. The pins have moved.
Two dates to put on the calendar before we lose the sunlight: Neon Nights at Omni La Costa on July 11 and September 5. Both are on a Friday and Saturday respectively, both are on-property so parking is not a problem, and both are the kind of event that gives a lived-in neighborhood a fresh reason to spend an evening at home.
